Boomerang in space!

This astronaut demonstrates the use of a boomerang in space. I always thought that the boomerang could only work in the atmosphere of Earth. It seems that it doesn't. My bad!

Comments for Boomerang in space!

There is air

There is obviously air in the shuttle or else that astronaut's would die. There is a lack of gravitational force inside the space shuttle, but assuredly there is oxygen for them to breathe.

> I always thought that the boomerang need air in order to work. I don't know if you noticed, but there is air inside that spacecraft. That's how the astronauts stay alive. You dumb s***.

No Air!!!

C'mon, you guys. Stop being so hard on the poster. Maybe there was no air. Maybe the astronaut died immediately after conducting the boomerang experiment. It would totally be worth one lousy astronaut to find out. :o

huh?

yep. clearly no air in there. Amazing that the man is moving around.

Chris Brown

I think just because chris isn't there there is "no air" how can I breathe with "No air" oh if only I could make a hit on my own thats "no air" I mean no fair. Love and kisses, Jordan P.S. Did you see me touch his face on idol, OMG it was so cool

I didn't see any air in there either.

There is no air in the ship, there is a mixture of gasses which has been designed to be a suitable supplement for the astronauts. It is an artifically designed enviroment, air is used to refer to the natural gas found on earth not gas in general. Either way it is a silly mistake

Think's? You're certainly not helping the cause...

Dude, either way its neat, so leave the dude(tte?) alone. Subby asked a good question, some of you graciously called subby a tard. Most of those return replies make subby look much smarter for asking the question than the folks replying. Incidentally, I didn't see any of the nasties post a decent reply for subby, so until you do, stfu and gbtw. Yes, theres breathable ambient gas for the dude; no, the gravity is not absent, but is greatly reduced. They refer to it generically as "zero gravity", in reality it's "microgravity". Gravity is everywhere, otherwise everything would fly apart, including the universe itself. The boomerang works because of the interaction between the shape of the item when thrown and the breathable gases in the environment, just like a boomerang interacts with the air we breathe on earth. It's basic thrust, lift and drag, just like on earth; makes planes and helos fly instead of drop out of the sky, makes boomerangs work. Incidentally, this one is a roomerang or some derivation .. made specifically to complete its' arc in shorter spaces than a boomerang. You can find them all over the place for cheap and they're fun until you get in trouble. All of that said, in conditions similar to these but in the actual vacuum of space, i.e., no "air" for the roomerang to interact with, it would have no lift or drag and would therefore follow a straight path pretty much forever after thrown until it hit something or was affected by the gravitational force of another object like a planet, star or other large mass, a black hole, etc.. For that matter, the space shuttle would do the same outside our orbit. Its thrusters and other engines work by artificially supplying the oxygen that is naturally absent in space in order for the engines to ignite the fuel and create movement through thrust. Without oxygen, no burn, without burn, no thrust, without thrust, you're lost in space, slave to gravitational forces beyond control. Here's something neat and related: Imagine standing on a small asteroid that has far less gravity than the Earth and no air to cause drag. Here you could actually pitch a baseball into a complete orbit. After throwing the ball, you could turn around, wait about two hours, and catch it as it comes up over the opposite horizon. Gravity is everywhere, drag isn't. Cool video, subby. Thanks for the post. Don't let the tards get you down. You will inevitably meet them again on their long, sad journey to the middle. :D

Newtons 4th law says any object in the absence of earth air is free to move so long as it's in contact with space air. Thankfully the ISS has lots of space air. Space air makes traveling to the moon difficult because it just makes stuff float and annoy you.

Actually the boomerang would come back in "outerspace" There is no such thing in this galaxy as a perfect vacuum, there is approximatly 1 hydrogen atom per cm cubed in space. The boomerang turning effect would take place, but it arc would be around 100,000 miles and take a good few years to return

It's only possible when...

You reach 88mph...i'm sure the ISS has a flux capacitor as well. Hope this clears things up.

To be fair...

He may have been confused, seeing as how there's an Air 'n Space Museum.

Yep, that's a special kind of "airless" boomerang. That's also a special kind of "airless" astronaut.

FAKE

The guy's laying on his back so of course the boomerang returns! He could throw a lead cube and it would return! It's a space shuttle mock-up so of course there's no air in there - he's on Earth! There's no air on Earth! Boomerangs don't exist! Astronauts and moon missions are a lie! Oxygen is a liberal global warming conspiracy! Shuttles only go from my parking space to the airplane terminal - they don't go into space!
